After a successful launch of his new restaurant, Chris Pastena contacted us to develop his second establishment, Tribune Tavern. Set in the historic Tribune building in the heart of downtown Oakland, Tribune Tavern is a restaurant that fully embraces the existing landmark where the Oakland Tribune newspaper was produced.
In order to create an identity that maintained the historic qualities of the building preserved by its new owners with an evolved look in a modern time, we used a letterpress metal type as the basis for the design. Set in a gothic type, to create the connection to the old Tribune typeface, and rockwell inspired thin slab bring together old world and new.
